Palatal Expanders

A palatal expander is a fixed or removable appliance that gradually widens a narrow upper jaw arch, creating room for proper alignment and a more balanced bite. Because the palate is most responsive to gentle pressure while a patient is still growing, expanders are most often used with younger patients before or alongside other orthodontic treatment.

Why an Expander May Be Recommended

  • Narrow Upper Arch — widening the arch can relieve crowding and create space for proper alignment.
  • Crossbite Correction — expanding the palate can help the upper and lower arches meet more evenly.
  • Preparing for Further Treatment — some patients use an expander to create room before braces or other appliances.

How We Plan and Fit Your Expander

Diagnosis starts with a clear picture of jaw structure and growth pattern. We use Digital Panoramic X-Ray to map the full jaw and Cephalometric Imaging to view the skeletal profile, helping guide precise planning. From there, a Custom Palatal Expander is precision-fit to gradually widen the palate at a controlled pace.
