Space Maintainers
Space Maintainers
When a baby tooth is lost too early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and block the permanent tooth coming in behind it. A space maintainer holds that space open until the adult tooth arrives.
Types of Space Maintainers
- Fixed Maintainers — a small band and wire attached to a neighboring tooth.
- Removable Maintainers — an appliance that can be taken out for cleaning.
- Bilateral Designs — a wire that holds space on both sides of the arch.
Living with a Space Maintainer
Keep it clean with gentle brushing, avoid sticky foods, and let us know if it feels loose. We check it at regular visits and remove it once the permanent tooth comes in.
